I received my Master of Public Policy in June 2021 from Portland State University and my Master of Education in May 2014 from Arizona State University. My goal is to combine my classroom experience with policy expertise and research training to contribute to the body of work aimed at improving education for students and teachers alike. Experience
Substitute Teacher, Multiple School Districts
Fall 2021 - present
While looking for work in the public policy and research sectors, I am working as a substitute teacher primarily in secondary classrooms in the David Douglas, Centennial, and Parkrose School Districts. I learn each students' name in every class in order to effectively manage classroom behavior. I teach a variety of subjects, including math, science, English language arts, English Language Development, Spanish, French, social studies, music, and special education specialty classes.
Independent Contractor, Policy Model and Template Project, I∙School
Spring 2021 - Summer 2021
For my summative policy project through PSU, I worked with Dr. Kathryn Kelly in writing a template and policy model for her fully-accredited, blended model private school based out of California and Nevada. All work was done remotely, via email and video conferencing software, and the final product can be found on the Writing Samples page of this website.
Independent Contractor, Ad Hoc Research Assistance, Pacific Research and Evaluation, LLC
Spring 2021 - Summer 2021
My primary role as an independent contractor was to provide research assistance on the community needs assessment linked on the Writing Samples page of this website. This involved doing an in-depth literature review of early learning and child care analyses in relevant areas of Washington and Oregon and developing a myriad of tables and analysis for the client's service region. Additionally, I provided support to other projects, such as writing reports based on survey data and participating in focus groups conducted for clients across the country via Zoom.
Submission Reviewer, Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
2020 - 2021
I evaluated assigned submissions to the Journal as a blind peer reviewer. I provided feedback to both the editors and the author, indicating whether the submission was sufficiently relevant and rigorous to publish in the Journal.
Teaching Assistant, Political Science Department
Fall 2020 and Winter 2021
I worked as a grading subcontractor for Professor Gilley during the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms for the courses Introduction to Comparative Politics and Asian Politics. I designed rubrics and used them to consistently grade papers and give timely feedback to undergraduate students. I used best practices to provide both positive and constructive feedback.
Associate Editor, Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
2019 - 2020
I supervised submissions and reviewers for the Journal. I collaborated with the editorial board, consulted with the editor-in-chief, communicated with the authors and reviewers, and brought two submissions to the point of publication.
Substitute Teacher, Multiple School Districts
2019 - 2020
While attending graduate school full time, I worked as a substitute teacher primarily in secondary classrooms in the Portland Public Schools, David Douglas, and Parkrose School Districts. I learned each students' name in every class in order to effectively manage classroom behavior. I taught a variety of subjects, including math, science, English language arts, Spanish, social studies, music, and special education specialty classes.
Public School Teacher
2014 - 2019
Clear Creek Middle School and Rey Middle Academy, Oregon, 2017-2019
I taught middle school math as a general education teacher as well as in an alternative education setting. I primarily taught 6th and 7th grade math classes, collaborating with teams at both the typical middle school and the alternative middle school program. Furthermore, I developed an experimental research project as a part of my annual evaluation. I also coached middle school girls' basketball and attended extracurricular activities as often as possible in support of my students.
Sherwood Middle School, Oregon, 2016-2017
I taught extra support math courses and managed a full caseload of students as a special education teacher. I further supported the general education teachers at the school in providing special education services to students according to federal guidelines. I wrote research documents about each student's abilities and needs, providing them with an individualized education plan. I facilitated an annual meeting with each student's multidisciplinary team, including other teachers, support staff, and parents/guardians.
La Joya Community High School, Arizona, 2014-2016
I taught geometry courses and managed a full caseload as a special education teacher. I established a new type of resource room program in the special education department that allowed students to come to me for assistance during class time. This made the assistance more centralized and relevant to students in the moment. I additionally provided a quiet and safe space for students to work on assessments and longer writing projects. My second year at the high school, I stepped into teaching geometry due to a teacher shortage. While learning to teach a new subject, I continued to provide support to all the students on my caseload.
